Of Agape, Climax, and Transubstantiation?

With the passing of crisis in a story comes celebration, perhaps a love scene. Survival or resurrection from death provides the central character a wider scope of consciousness.

Personal concerns no longer drive the protagonist. Those of the community dominate her or his thoughts and actions instead. Agape love now influences their choices and behavior.

Personal suffering has yielded a greater respect and understanding of those aches and pains that affect, and beset the collective. From this emerges empathy guided by the wish to heal. Read the rest of this entry…

African Bushmen, God, and Reality in Writing…

There is a Dream dreaming us.

–African Bushman

(The Mystic Vision–Daily Encounters with the Divine, Compiled by Andrew Harvey and Anne Baring)

How often do I create characters, work with them in uncovering their stories and personalities as I put write them on the page only to then meet a person who within seconds I recognize as one of my characters in a novel?

Very.

Of course these people have most often been around since long before I wrote or even conceived of the story to my novel, and its characters. I have not breathed them into life. And yet a connection exists between what we write and the life around us.

Let’s say for instance that the people I meet who remind me of characters I have created or who have emerged in my stories, have risen in some sense, from my novels.

What would that mean, that we as writers create characters whom we will then encounter in the physical form of human individuals through engagements and interactions and life?

And let’s say these people do not know, have no understanding or awareness that we are their creator. Continue reading ‘African Bushmen, God, and Reality in Writing…’

Of Illusions, Diamonds, and The Imago Dei…

Crises consist of many obstacles, the least of which include illusions, and deceptions. Illusions held about life, and deceptions by others, and self fiercely clung to often comprise the nets limiting awareness.

Reaching the peak of crisis, and fighting the battle that awaits requires perseverance and remaining focused on the task at hand.

Doing so generates the strength and acuity to cut through the gales of misconceptions and shatter intricate pillars supporting half-truths, and lies of omission.

To the degree these inconsistencies are destroyed the protagonist gains a depth of insight nearly parallel or akin to prophecy.

In reality their vision to does not extend into the future.

Rather they are more able to behold the events and consequences of actions that stand before them.

Climbing the summit of one’s dilemma’s and problems, meeting the physical obstacles tied to inner demons and slaying the monsters of betrayal, and self-delusions grants clearer vision, both within and around one.

Experience and knowledge sows seeds from which sprout the gifts of truth and honesty wrapped in a bow of fortitude to remain committed to what is, and not turn away, when our wishes are not immediately granted. Read the rest of this entry…

The Genuine, Truth and Liberation...r

There is something in every one of you that waits and listens for the sound of the genuine in yourself. It is the only true guide you will ever have. And if you cannot hear it, you will all of your life spend your days on the ends of strings that somebody else pulls.–

Howard Thurman, African American mystic

So much of what we do as writers extends from, if not flows out of the voice of our genuine and authentic self.

The genuine of which Thurman speaks holds both the key to what we write, and our ability and commitment to writing the words of our hearts as delivered to us through the various dimensions of life that channel into and through us.

At a time when so much about and within our society seeks to silence the genuine, what is honest, unfettered and pure, writers of today stand upon the threshold of a new day.

It is a dawning, not unlike times and past eras where old paradigms shifted and some fell in the wake of new ones arising. Continue reading ‘The Genuine, Truth and Liberation..’

Surviving a crisis bestows special knowledge garnered, and held by few.

It also grants admittance into various orders of wisdom yielded by experience.

Every novel or story a writer crafts tells the life of a certain crisis, and chronicles a central character’s survival of that crisis. The process of writing that novel flows out of an upheaval, the completion of which involves many obstacles that reach a crescendo of conflict and tension. Read the rest of this entry…

‘My Name is Khan’, Bollywood, and Writing…

This weekend I saw the movie, “My Name is Khan“. It was a lovely, entertaining and deeply moving experience for both me and my husband.

For writers unfamiliar with Bollywood movies, I high recommend beginning to watch them.

Though long, they are a wonderful artistic creation to behold. As with any art form, not all are excellent.

A significant number have moved and restored hope to my consciousness over the last decade such that I now have a collection of around 100 DVD’s of various Bollywood movies.

My children, ages 10 years to 23 years love them and even purchase their own. Through a contract made with Fox/Searchlight Pictures, Bollywood, located in Mumbhai, India, will now have its films shown on the big screen throughout America.

This is a wonderful venture that ideally will lift the craft of American movie-making from the dearth of ideas and imagination. Continue reading ‘‘My Name is Khan’, Bollywood, and Writing…’

Of Judas, Kali, and Transcendence?

Without Judas, the Crucifixion may not have taken place.

In the absence of Ma Kali, with her teeth dripping of blood, Lord Siva would have no consort to usher in a time of death and rebirth manifested through the fiery dance he performs when angry.

Upon raising the knife above his head, Abraham, out of obedience to Jehovah, moved to kill his son, Isaac, as sacrifice Abraham. In so doing Abraham opened the opportunity for God to show mercy by then ordering him to stop.

The antagonisms of our life provoke us to create. Read the rest of this entry…

Writing, The Enemy of Good, and ‘Goldilocks’… http://ping.fm/EHw8j

Writing, The Enemy of Good, and ‘Goldilocks’…

What draws us to write often comprises that which presents our greatest challenge when writing a story, or novel.

The psychic and emotional wounds that compel us to write present the greatest, and yet oftentimes, most invisible obstacles we encounter throughout the process of crafting and refining our stories for public consumption.

So what are these demons that lay in way upon the trail we hew in seeking to manifest our dreams, the demons that rear their heads, beautiful and ugly that can distract and pull me from the path as ordered by my heart?

They come in many sizes and shapes. Continue reading ‘Writing, The Enemy of Good, and ‘Goldilocks’…’

Perfectionism, Fears and Good Husbands…

Readying your book for publication, i.e. the printing and binding of the words you have penned is an illuminating process.

First of all, if you’re like me, a perfectionist, nothing you read of the novel or story seems right.

All the sentences you spent hours upon hours crafting, shaping, editing, refining and then re-writing sound horrible. I read my stories and novels aloud during the last stages of editing.

Perhaps the words sound awkward because I don’t want to believe that I’ve reached this point. And under my own steam. Continue reading ‘Perfectionism, Fears and Good Husbands…’

Many things can happen during the approach towards the heart of a story, or novel, both for the protagonist, and the writer.

The blossoming flower of romance provides a mainstay in many stories that tug and keep open the hearts and minds of readers, wherein new possibilities enter for them to ponder both in the narrative line of the story, or novel, that perhaps offers a mirror into their own lives.

We come to books, and read not only to know that we are not alone, but also to solidify, validate and unconsciously prepare ourselves for the one constant in all of human living–change. Read the rest of this entry…

Last Edits, My Personal Best, and Being Present…

The past two weeks have been a blur.

I’m in the last stages of editing my novel, The House, that is due out later this year, and times have been quite interesting.

It’s funny what happens when you reach a point of having to let go of a book and “put it out there” so to speak.

For me it’s a scary time.

And particularly so, since I’m self-publishing this novel. My first work, Keeper of Secrets…Translations of an Incident” a collection of short stories, was brought to print by a traditional publishing house. Continue reading ‘Last Edits, My Personal Best, and Being Present…’

There stands an intermediate region in the life and structure of a novel, that place between crossing the border of the opening and beginning and entering into a series of actions that lead to the penultimate center of the journey.

It lies between the edge of that vast new world of survival that constitutes the protagonist’s path of growth and transformation, the steps she or he makes towards achieving their goal. It is a land filled obstacles of varied sorts, and the ultimate crisis that manifests profound change.

This area operates much like the night before that big game, the minutes ticking up to giving one’s debut concert. For writers this can function much like reading one’s novel for those last times wherein we institute final edits towards bringing the work to its brightest hue. Read the rest of this entry…

Give-and-Take, Mysteries and Playgrounds…

Networking is an interesting and weird thing. It requires give-and-take.

In a world or culture so focused on taking, and amassing, the 21st century version of connecting with others can cause us to see some things about ourselves that are not so pretty.

The Internet is clearly a place where transparency is a plus.

You must give to get. And what you give has to be of service to those from whom seek to receive.

So how does one get into this mode of giving without worrying so much of what I’ll receive? Continue reading ‘Give-and-Take, Mysteries and Playgrounds…’

Distractions, Passion and Showing Up...

Why is it so difficult to write sometimes?

Distraction.

It is the secret enemy of writers and authors that slithers in, most often unnoticed, when we have many things going on.

Ahhh, the art of multi-tasking.

Distraction presents an especially difficult challenge when good and positive things are happening for and to us.

Writers, like most artists, come to our work because we were not seen and acknowledged by our parents.

Well-meaning, and by no means Mommie Dearest, our parents held our well-being as their utmost concern when guiding, and coercing, if not blatantly steering us from pursuing the work we sought to accomplish as artists in our efforts towards attaining financial fulfillment by doing what we love.

They cared for us. Yet, their ideas were oftentimes the least supportive. And so we found ways of distracting ourselves from their desires and will to have us be more normal by choosing careers offering what they felt certain would provide a more stable and secure lifestyle.
