Dear John, A Daughter’s Wish and Moments of Awakening… http://ping.fm/7rT6t

Dear John, A Daughter’s Wish and Moments of Awakening…

My daughter recently stated that she hopes that my husband and I live to a ripe old age and that we die together, much like Noah and Allie in the movie based on The Notebook, by Nicholas Sparks. My daughter had just finished reading Spark’s novel, now a movie, Dear John.

That’s the great thing about reading books. They awaken us to parts of ourselves, hopes dreams and wishes, and those held for us by loved ones.

That my daughter, not yet 25, could offer me such a gift I find astounding. Most children, and rightfully so, want their parents alive for as long as possible.

Saying this to my daughter, she responded with, “I can handle my life, take care of myself as long as I know that you and Daddy are together somewhere in the universe, even if I’m not with you.” Continue reading ‘Dear John, A Daughter’s Wish and Moments of Awakening…’

Of Clarity and Understanding, Guide and Map, Epiphany and Plot

Reaching that point where the protagonist has made the change, we, as writers feel differently.

We see the world of our novel from another level.

Ideally we come to hold those dimensions of personality regarding our central character(s) come in greater clarity and understanding.

And yet this is also a place where we can get to know ourselves better as individuals, not simply as persons who write. Read the rest of this entry…

Faith, Our Personal Best and the Work We Do...

The hardest think about raising children is developing patience. Writing stories and novels also takes time. And faith.

Both processes ask that we give our personal best at all times. And yet to do both jobs well mothers, parents and writers need room to breath and reflect.

But I want to stay with mothers, because so often when we write we, and the world does not take seriously what we do, particularly if we choose to operate primarily as a mother, and a writer second.

Those of us who choose to place our writing second do so because I think on some level we know that we will never reach our personal best at crafting stories until we have nurtured our children to an adequate point in their and our lives.

This is not the only way to come to writing. This is our way. Continue reading ‘Faith, Our Personal Best and the Work We Do…’

Of Dilemmas, Alice in Wonderland, and Shifts in Consciousness

There comes a time in every story or novel when the main character stands in the midst of her, or his dilemma like Alice does when facing Wonderland.

The protagonist ponders, How do present circumstances differ from my immediate past?

This place, like that of Alice in her wondrous, and yet frightening Wonderland, sits between the immediate past of the main character, a time of order and safety shaken by chaos, and the present moment of having begun the journey towards adapting to the change required by upheaval. Of Publishing Contracts, Motherhood, Dreams, Hopes and Wishes…

I’ve been busy these last few weeks refining and making last changes to the document files for interior and book cover of my novel, “The House“. It’s been an interesting experience bringing this piece of work, “The House” to fruition.

My first book, a collection of short stories, “Keeper of Secrets…Translations of an Incident“, was traditionally published. The decision to self-publish my novel came quite easily.

October 2008 was not a good time for economics in America. The publishing industry that has long been languishing, and like other areas is presently struggling with balancing their books.

Writers lucky enough to get a contract with a publishing contract despite the industry’s recent financial struggles that have folded into present challenges walk a tight rope and need to be able to donate their time to following through on the contract to which they have agreed.

I don’t believe in seeking the opportunity to take on or agreeing to follow through on a task to which I cannot give over my best.

A wife of 28 years, and a mother and psychotherapist with three children at strategic points in their lives I feel a strong commitment to seeing my children in place before venturing wholeheartedly into manifesting my dreams through involvements and contracts that require enormous amounts of time. Of Character Shifts, Balloon Boy and Well-Meaning Friends

Entering the meat of a novel offers revelation after revelation.

Personalities come forth, shift and recede into the murky lands from which they emerged.

Characters shift positions in an effort to hold honor to, if not find their authentic identity. Perceptions change. The child of truth and wisdom forged by time and circumstance relays the story within the narrative. Read the rest of this entry…

Of Long Weekends, Discipline and Time for Dreaming…

This past weekend was a holiday weekend. I relish long weekends. They give me more time with my husband and children.

The greatest challenge of any writer is finding enough time.

Time to write and time with family and friends.

The true writer writes. She or he doesn’t talk or dream about writing.

They develop a discipline unique to their psyche and life structure that allows for the writing, crafting, revision and ultimate completion of a story or novel.

Each stage of creating a literary work requires time. Time given to the very writing and re-writing of the piece, and then there is the time given over to gestation, allowing our ideas and words to percolate and perhaps metamorphose. Of Cause and Effect, Twin Universes, and Sacrifice

The protagonist’s decision to act constitutes a cornerstone moment in the life a novel.

It signifies the shift from the beginning or set-up of the novel to the middle characterized as a process of action and reaction, better known as cause-and-effect. Still others term this area of the novel, and quite aptly, causality-and-build.

Cause-and-effect emphasizes the action and reaction quality representative of midsection of novels, the heart and lungs of the story.

Causality-and-build by its very words points to the uphill movement of the story towards crisis and climax that involves story and character arc. Read the rest of this entry…

A novel, the first draft of which I wrote 8 years ago, has come together.

Wow!

It hit me like a ton of bricks. I’m so excited and obsessed with this revision, like with none other.

It’s such a wonderful feeling to have something that you’ve been holding, and for such a long time, on which you’ve worked so hard, and then realizing it just wasn’t right, you laid aside.

I logged 6 revisions during this time. Yet always at the end, the pieces didn’t fit. I had yet to display my best work on this story.

Sometimes the universe delivers us the idea for a creation for which, despite our fervor and commitment to carrying out, we lack the skills to bring the creation into greatest illumination.

And so we wait. Continue reading ‘Commitment, The Number 8, and Einstein’s Theory of Relativity…’

Leaving the world as it is, and entering the border between the world as it was, and presently exists in the newly leveraged chaos of change requires courage and faith. It also asks for willingness to acknowledge that one has entered the unknown.

My reading goals for this year are to read and study as many as possible of the novels in mystery writer, Anne Perry’s, William Monk series.

After reading, “The Face of a Stranger” I have become totally engrossed in not only Monk’s struggle to regain his memory as he works to solve murders that take place during the later half of the 1800’s, but also with Perry’s depth of authorial narration interwoven with her ability to deliver internal thoughts of Monk.
