Of Relationships, Dharma and That Mirror of Mirrors Which Sits At Our Core…

"Keep knocking and the joy inside will eventually open a window and look out to see who's there." Rumi
The decisive question for man is:
Is he related to something infinite or not?
That is the telling question of his life.
…
In the final analysis, we count for something only because of the essential we embody, and if we do not embody that, life is wasted.
…
In our relationships to other men, too, the crucial question is whether an element of boundlessness is expressed in the relationship.
–Carl Gustav Jung on Jung in “Memories, Dreams, Reflections” by Carl Jung

I recently heard a podcast, Relationship Revelation, given by Deborah and Lyle Dukes on Chocolate Pages hosted by Pam Perry.
During the interview Deborah Dukes addressed the importance of relationships and how our interactions reveal not only who we are at the core and the essence of our personality, but also how we interact with God.
“You will [discover] what is inside you… [whether] you [have the capacity to] love… when relating to others. …Your relationships with others mirror your relationship with God. The way we treat other people is an indicator, is a guide, [to the nature of] our relationship how with God. [God said,] ‘It is not good for [an individual] to be alone.’”
We need others.
Man cannot live on bread alone. Nor can woman.
Much of what Deborah and Lyle discuss forms the cornerstone of Deborah’s assertions in her book,

Of Mothers, Daughters and the Wounds That Shape Us…
bandoned, a photo by tobibritsch on Flickr.
Injury to the mother-daughter relationship rents a profound wound, and gives rise to serious strain between both daughters and mothers. Does my mother love me? Why does my daughter hate me so much? Why doesn't she love me? A question often asked by both daughter and mother. And for the daughter, I mama doesn't love me, when who will? Or who can? These questions and more along with the associated feelings of worthlessness,

Of Apologies, Sincerity and Saying What We Actually Mean…

What did you mean to say?
Apologies over what we said usually indicate that what we said, the words we used did not gain favor with those to whom we were speaking.
Rarely does it mean, at least in America, that we are truly sorry.
But what do we mean when we say, “That’s not what I mean to say?” if we are truly sincere?
What words would we choose if we gained the opportunity to turn the clock back and speak again, Read the rest of this entry…

Presently I am reading Anuradha Roy‘s novel, An Atlas of Impossible Longing .
As with any good novel, interactions between the main characters are strained.
Tension abounds, but not in a melodramatic way.
The story moves with a nice speed for an opening.
I look forward each evening–a hallmark that I have found a jewel of a novel–to settling into bed, Read the rest of this entry…

The outset of the Greek myth of Eros and Psyche, shows Eros leaning over the sleeping mortal, Psyche, and fervently prepared to strike Psyche with one of his arrows and create a wound that will command her to fall in love with a beast.
Eros‘s mother, Aphrodite sent him on this mission out of her jealousy of the beautiful, young Psyche.
And yet something about Psyche and/or her beauty evoked sorrow in Eros.
A silent knowing moved between them even with Psyche asleep and her eyes closed.
Perhaps he saw himself, weak and driven at the merciless hand of his mother, Aphrodite’s less than virtuous and ethical desires.

“When peeling the pomegranate the goal is to release the seeds and discard the membrane surrounding the seeds“. How Do I Peel A Pomegranate by Ann Johnson
Human relationships present a challenge much like peeling a pomegranate, or perhaps at time, like unraveling a knot that has formed in the chain of a necklace, a ball of yarn or a length of thread.
In each case involving either the pomegranate and or the necklace, thread or yarn, efforts to release or dispel the knot require that we sit down and untie or as we like to say, unravel the knot.
We must bring our fingers or a sharp object into the center of the tension and pull apart the threads separate them from around each other. Read the rest of this entry…

St. Bonkus, patron saint of failed relationships and blind dates…, a photo by Shitao (away) on Flickr.
I once had a client who said, “We [humans] consist of but pockets of time. Spend time on things that don’t matter-waste time–and you throw away yourself.”
As with life and pockets of time, humans also consist of a conglomeration of relationships, none so important as the one we hold with ourselves.
Despite all, we recognize and best come to know ourselves, who we are, our likes and dislikes, pet peeves and joys through interaction with others.
We can never truly come to understand some aspects of ourselves except by way of interaction with those outside ourselves. Read the rest of this entry…

Twitter Chat: “Of Death, Mortality and The Steam of Compassion…â€
Posted by Anjuelle Floyd | Filed under Articles and Essays, Twitter Chat
Should Huma Abedin forgive her husband, US Representative Anthony Weiner?
For further discussion join me for a Twitter Chat, this Thursday, June 16th, 2011 @ 5pm PDT/6pm MT/7pm CDT/8pm EDT.
http://ping.fm/om4yW
______________________________________________________________________________
Last Friday, I heard a young woman say, “She [Huma] should abort the child she is carrying by Weiner,” both of whom I might add “…have not reached their first wedding anniversary…,” according to Amanda Read in her article Weinergate, Women, and a Secularized Society (6/15/2011) at the Washington Times
Should Huma do this I could not condemn her.
I cannot say what a person should are should not do regarding the betrayal a loved one or friend exacts upon him or her.
And yet our ability to move beyond experiences of hurt and emotional injury inflicted by friends, family and even acquaintances whom we hardly know establishes the foundation upon which we will build our healing.
And yet there is the anger.
Anger indicates a transgression of our boundaries, both physical and particularly emotional.
Beneath anger always lies hurt.
The steam of compassion can only rise from the flames of anger.
And what of forgiveness?
______________________________________________________________________________
What guides your steps in dealing with betrayal, infidelity, and the injurious actions of others, most particularly of family and friends–those whom you love?
What can you live with regarding your actions towards those who have hurt you?
How do you want to die?
What must you do to achieve your desires for transitioning from this life into what lies beyond?
For further discussion join me for a Twitter Chat, this Thursday, June 16th, 2011 @ 5pm PDT/6pm MT/7pm CDT/8pm EDT.

What happens when your best friends are two men and you marry one of them?
_________________________________________________________________________________________________
This is the case for 35-year-old Sahel Ohin.
As a child Sahel, spent the afternoons of spring and summer making mud cakes. Titus brought the water, Carl the dirt from his mother’s flower garden. All three lived on the same street in Oakland, California. After mixing the dirt and water Sahel poured the mud into tin pie pans her mother had discarded. Titus and Carl would then place the pans filled with mud in the sun to dry.
This was their work.

Of Supply, Demand, and The Woeful Truth About Publishing and Authors…

Bleeding Obvious? by jasontheaker
Bleeding Obvious? a photo by jasontheaker on Flickr.
Author and publisher, Zetta Brown’s recent blog, “Authors! Can’t find your book in a bookstore? You may be luckier than you think!“, got me to thinking–no pun intended–about the old law of economics, that of supply and demand.
With bookstores and sellers tightly adhering to what seems to me, an outdated mode of purchasing books from publishers, and authors who choose to self-publish–that of retaining, if not demanding, the opportunity to return unsold books they have received from us–I wonder what would happen if publishers and authors began to print less books.
A blog post, “A Woeful Truth About Publishing,” at Champagne Books explains this paradoxical phenomenon in detail.
In short, I am asking, “How would economic market respond if publishers did not make books so readily accessible?” Read the rest of this entry…

Of Grinding Pepper, Banalities, and Seeking That Which We Yet Understand…
Posted by Anjuelle Floyd | Filed under ... anjuellefloyd ..., ...married life ..., ...the writing life..., Articles & Essays
Working as both a wife of nearly 29 years, and mother of 3, has prepared me in various ways to accomplish the work of a fiction writer.
Working as a wife and mother requires a lot of what an Islamic Imam described as grinding pepper.
Grinding pepper, from the perspective of the imam encompasses those activities that we here in the west describe as comprising the bane of our existence–mindless tasks, that we view as disrespectful of our intelligence and that devalue our worth as a person.
The world banal implies a lack of uniqueness.
Something that is banal possesses no originality.
It is like the wheel that begs for no reinvention, rather more unique and original ways of bringing a deeper level of presence and attention to the task(s) at hand–tasks that when practiced with a presence of mind and heart sharpen our skills and artistry in all areas of life, yield an original creation, and transform us as individuals. Of Revelation, Illusions and the Parallel Processes of Writing and Discovery…
Posted by Anjuelle Floyd | Filed under ... anjuellefloyd ..., Articles & Essays
Revelation plays an important role in constructing and/or assembling the middle section of a novel.
Revelation also encompasses the uncovering of truth of what has always stood present, but remained hidden by strong held illusions and beliefs.
Stories and novels stand upon revelations, ones that sustain the cause-and-effect events that comprise, most particularly, the plot of a novel and that lead towards crisis and onto climax. Read the rest of this entry…

My Writing ‘Process’ by Elle Pedersen
Posted by Anjuelle Floyd | Filed under ... anjuellefloyd ..., Articles & Essays, Why Do I Write ...
———————————————–
My mum rang me for my birthday a couple of weeks ago.
She had found my old intermediate school reports – most of my teachers said the same thing: “Elle is very good with her writing and reading but disrupts lessons in class and upsets her classmates.”
Hmmmm – so basically I’m a pain in the ar*e who can read and write – explains why I write.
Working full-time as a palliative care nurse for the past seven years, I’ve rediscovered my inner-child, revisited all the things I dreamed about as a kid.
I don’t think there’s one single person on this earth that hasn’t felt alone and afraid.
When you are able to describe very intense emotions/feelings that you have felt personally – in any form of literature and other people can relate – that is pretty awesome. Read the rest of this entry…

Unless a publisher can provide strong marketing and distribution, I cannot see where they have earned 75% of royalties from electronic book sales.
In the past, when books only came in hard/paperback, publishers could justify their actions in that they paid the bill on having copies of our books printed up.
Now with Amazon stating that Kindle sales of books out number those of hard/paperback 150:100 publisher must rethink the service they are providing authors.
Authors too, must become more business savvy. Read the rest of this entry…

Interview | Book Reviewer, Roxanne Loop
Posted by Anjuelle Floyd | Filed under Articles and Essays, Book Reviewer, Guest blog, Interview
1. Tell a little about yourself.
My name is Roxanne and I received my B.A. in English from Sierra Nevada College.
I run the blog Unintentionally Brilliant, which is mostly filled with my daily meanderings, but also features book reviews.
In “real life” I work as an administrative assistant for an environmental consulting firm in Reno, NV.
I’m mother to a four-year-old who provides a lot of humorous (and sometimes poignant) entries for the blog.
2. How did you come to reviewing fiction?
I was actually looking for something to post about one day, and I had just finished reading this fantastic book called This is Where We Live.
I decided to review it on my site.
I had so much fun doing so, I decided to make book reviews a semi-regular appearance on the blog.
I started off reviewing books that I picked up from the library, and have recently started querying publishers and authors for review copies.
3. How long have you been reviewing fiction?
I have always been the type of person to recommend books to friends. In this way, I have been a reviewer for a very long time. But in regards to the blog and writing physical reviews, I have only been reviewing fiction since September, so six months.
4. Are you a writer? If so what genre? Have you ever considered writing? Read the rest of this entry…

Of 1st Novels, Eagerness to Publish, and the Need for Cooling Off Periods…
Posted by Anjuelle Floyd | Filed under ... anjuellefloyd ..., Articles & Essays, Articles and Essays
For anyone who has been eager to push their novel onto the world without taking a cooling off period read this blog post, an interview Meg Waite Clayton of SheWrites.com conducted with Eleanor Brown, author of Weird Sisters.
The lines that really touched me were, “…I knew it wasn’t as good as it could have been. I knew it had inconsistencies and plot holes big enough to drive a bus through and was in desperate need of a few months of lying fallow while I worked on something else and then came back to it with fresh eyes and an honest heart. But I had set some ridiculous deadline for myself, and I think I knew, deep down, that it was going to be hard, hard work to whip that baby into shape, and I just couldn’t face it. ...” –Eleanor Brown (When Your 1st Book Is Not Your First)

Why Do I Write and What Is My Process | Kelly Gooltz

Why do I Write?
by Kelly Gooltz
The opportunity to explain that to a group of other wonderful women SHOULD elicit excitement but it has me wondering and searching for how best to answer it.
Am I a writer? What is the purpose of all this?
I toggle between multiple blogs, as many of you may know. It is always so hard to know and define the purpose of all this time, effort, and energy in tangible ways.
My family blog serves a definite purpose; it provides first and foremost a manner in which I and my immediate family (Bob & kids) a way to remember our life, appreciate what we have and reflect upon our current and past blessings. Read the rest of this entry…

Why Do I Write and What’s My Process–Juliet Wilson
Posted by Anjuelle Floyd | Filed under ... anjuellefloyd ..., Why Do I Write ...
As a child I loved writing compositions at school and even poems.
When it came to choosing my academic future though I chose sciences, knowing that I could write poetry while studying sciences, whereas if I studied literature I would never have kept up my interest in science.
I lived in Malawi, in southern Africa for two years, teaching sciences, which was a wonderfully inspiring experience.
When droughts hit Malawi in 2002, I put together and self published Bougainvillea Dancing a chapbook of poetry mostly inspired by my time in the country, which raised money for charities working in Malawi. Read the rest of this entry…

Why I Write: Kim Kircher
I started out writing as I suspect many do.
I was thirteen years old, acne sprouting on my face like mold on month-old cheese, my hair getting frizzier by the minute, the world a cold, damp place.
Word son paper became a sort of safe haven for all of my embarrassing,navel-searching teen angst.
Luckily, while my love of the written word never faltered,my cathartic needs changed.
I write now because I want to say something. Read the rest of this entry…

Nicole Easterwood–â€Why Do I Write and What is My Process?â€
Posted by Anjuelle Floyd | Filed under ... anjuellefloyd ..., Why Do I Write ...
TWO QUESTIONS
Nicole Easterwood
Why do I write?
Sometimes I think about quitting when I am at my wits end, when I am pulling my hair out and screaming into the barren walls of an empty house.
But then I take a day off and speed down the interstate with my hair and windows down and realize that it is the one thing that has always kept me alive and makes me feel the most alive.
I realize that even the freedom of being incomplete control of a vehicle does not compare to the freedom that words give me.
Never so much blood pumps through my veins as when my fingers are tapping against the keys or my hands are becoming calloused from holding a pen for too long.
Nothing makes my heart pound as much or brings me such immense joy as the feeling of an e-mail saying that one of my stories is going to be published. Read the rest of this entry…

You write about overcoming mental depression by drawing on Christian religious and spiritual principles in your books That Was Then, This Is Now and Completely Whole.
1. Tell us a little about your life.
I was born and raised in Northern California. I am the youngest of eight children and the first published author.
I have two daughters and I have one grand daughter (whom I intend to spoil).
2. What personal experience allowed you insight into understanding mental depression?
And what is one Christian spiritual/religious principle have you drawn on for help?
I went through a very difficult divorce that nearly devastated me.
