Of Mars in Cancer, Courts of Change, and Travels…
Every story is like a court case wherein we, the author, like an attorney, tries a case of our protagonist.
Who is on trial?
Is your protagonist the defendant or the plaintiff seeking judgment and damages for a wrong committed upon her or him?
If she or his had been wronged then what was the crime and the injury inflicted?
Who committed the injustice?
What cries out for change?
Is this injustice still occurring at the outset of the novel?
If so what does the central character need to accomplish to stop the wrongful act?
The story we craft becomes our protagonist’s quest, their journey to achieve justice and survival, a tale of change and transformation.

Of Symbols, Change and Arc of Growth and Transformation…
The display of revelations that take place during the denouement and resolution, end, of a novel must take place in scene, not summary.
End of story revelations work much like the action taking place during the crisis and climax points where the immediacy of the characters’ actions impress upon readers the significance and meaning of the ordeal the central character/characters are undergoing, surviving and ultimately growing stronger by enduring.
Just as the crisis and climax point of a novel provide places of major transition and transformation, so to the revelations presented during denouement and at resolution offer one last stage of growth and change. Read the rest of this entry…

Introspection, Thought and Nascent Creations…
Recently I’ve been helping my high school teenager with the story they are writing. Now that school has ended and summer vacation has begun they are spending more time writing on their work.
It is wonderful to watch them pour their energy in passion into the project.
Doing so revives wistful memories of when I began writing nearly two decades ago.
Recalling my first attempts at writing a novel, brings to mind not simply the excitement and angst at setting out to accomplish such a great feat.
I doubt we would have succeeded had most of us who have accomplished this goal understood the full nature of our undertaking and what it would and has required.
And so it has been with care and caution in choosing my words and responses that have and sought to nurture my child’s passion when they have sought my guidance and consultation. Continue reading ‘Introspection, Thought and Nascent Creations…’

Of Revelations, Redemption and Grace…
The greatest revelation in a novel often comes, quite understandably, during the end. The context in which this occurs involves releasing underlying knowledge, all of which provides the stage upon where the ultimate truth of everyone’s motives comes forth.
Protagonists that draw on our senses and emotions not only face tough dilemmas and challenges. They also encounter wonderfully treacherous antagonists whose actions force the main character to dig deep within themselves, assess and display their strengths. Read the rest of this entry…

Our Greatest Fear, Our Earnest Hope: To Love and Be Loved…
Love strengthens and transforms. It also frightens.
Experiencing love, unadulterated, unconditional, and freely given soothes us in places long hardened over time by insults and wounds inflicted in the flesh and to our character and emotions.
Love and acceptance despite and because of who we are, faults, shortcomings, warts and all exhumes not only our previous injuries, but lifts our vulnerabilities to the surface.
The frightened girls and boys that our hard exteriors have hidden over the years are summoned forth.
We descend to our knees in the face of an eternal truth. Continue Reading »

Art, The Muse, and Beholding The Other...
“The Muse then is that most terrified of all the virgins. She starts if she hears a sound, pales if you ask her questions, spins and vanishes if you disturb her dress. We might start off by paraphrasing Oscar Wilde’s poem, substituting the world “Art†for “Love.â€
Art will fly if held too lightly.
Art will die if held too tightly.
Lightly, tightly, how do I know?
Whether I holding or letting Art go?â€
–Ray Bradbury, Zen in the Art of Writing/Essays on Creativity
Beckoning and befriending The Muse takes work and energy. The focus required to summon The Muse asks that we turn inward.
Looking at one’s own self consolidates awareness of our motives, those conscious and unconscious, what drives us to move through and impress ourselves upon the world in a unique manner that distinguishes us and expresses our personality.
The impetus to create involves two simultaneous processes, one of bringing the formless into form, making something out of the rawness of nothing.
And then there is transformation under which each artist goes when crafting and refining our work.
The Muse oversees and directs these two aspects of making while being remade, molding while being reshaped. Continue reading ‘Art, The Muse and Beholding The Other…’

Of Turning Points, Disclosures and Amplifying Conflict…
Revelations in a novel not only reveal character, but also ideally raise the stakes, up the ante, so-to-speak, which ultimately intensifies conflict.
The opening revelation and/or those of the first chapters of a novel establish the chaos that has befallen your protagonist, i.e. display the problem she or he is facing.
Disclosures during the middle of your story widen the deepen the borders of the problem, thereby expose more of your protagonist’s–personality, weakness and strengths, hopes and fears. Read the rest of this entry…

The Muse, Mystery and Grace…
“It isn’t easy. Nobody has ever done it consistently. Those who try hardest, scare it off into the woods. Those who turn their backs and saunter along, whistling softly between their teeth, hear it treading quietly behind them, lured by a carefully acquired disdain.
We are speaking, of course, of The Muse.â€
–Ray Bradbury, Zen in the Art of Writing/Essays on Creativity
Many people imagine the life of a writer as one of awakening each morning to a flowing stream of words that pour onto our writing tablet or through our fingers and onto the computer screen, our greatest challenge being that of writing or moving our fingers quick enough on the computer keys to catch the words.
There are times like that. But more often than not, we struggle to find those words that ideally give readers a smooth ride into the escape of our stories and novels.
A more honest way of describing what we do is to say that the smoother our sentences flow and the more intense a readers entrancement into at story, the harder the writer toiled at kneading and carving that ease of journey presented in the magic carpet of our words.
But what of The Muse? Continue reading ‘The Muse, Mystery and Grace…’

Of Revelations, Developments and Hidden Aspects of Personality…
Novels consist of a string of revelations.
These revelations, consistently timed and well paced comprise and provide an important part of plot.
As such they play and inherent and necessary role in character development.
Revelations lead to irrevocable moments wherein the protagonist, when faced with an immediate challenge demanding on the spot response, makes a decision and acts in a way that forces her or him forward. Read the rest of this entry…

Marriage, Terror, and Seeing into the Choreography of Souls…
So much of marriage is about seeing the other, your spouse, and allowing your true self to come through, i.e. being seen yourself.
My novel, “The House,†chronicles the experience of a woman, Anna Manning, during the last 3 months of her marriage wherein her husband, Edward, has withheld aspects of his true nature from. Throughout their nearly thirty-three years of marriage has been unfaithful Edward, involved in 3 longstanding affairs of which Anna knew.
These affairs, horrible as they were stemmed from vulnerabilities and emotional injuries rooted in Edward’s childhood, and of which he never discussed with Anna. Continue Reading »

Arsenic, Tremors and the Tonic of Writing…
“I have learned, on my journeys, that if I let a day go by without writing, I grow uneasy. Two days and I am in tremor. Three and I suspect lunacy. Four and I might as well be a hog, suffering the flux in a wallow. An hour’s writing is a tonic. …Taking your pinch of arsenic every morn so you can survive to sunset. Another pinch at sunset so that you can more than survive until dawn. The micro-arsenic-dose swallowed here prepares you not to be poisoned and destroyed up ahead.â€
—-Ray Bradbury, Zen in the Art of Writing/Essays on Creativity
Most of come to writing seeking some kind of healing. Either consciously or unconsciously we have been hurt and experienced bodily pain, or injury to the soul. We are broken, or at least some part of us is. But we are not a victim.
Writing knows no victims, only those who seek healing from the sheer force of will and strength expressed and felt when and in our writing. Continue reading ‘Arsenic, Tremors and the Tonic of Writing…’

Motion, Identification and The Inertial Frame of Reference…
“Everything moves. Everything …motion is just a manifestation of going from one spot to another spot in space. When we are trying to understand motion all of the things that we measure from have to come from an inertial frame of reference. An inertial frame of reference is a reference frame that is moving at a constant speed and not changing direction.â€
–Motion and Relativity, Dr. Charles Liu, Research Associate @ the Department of Astrophysics, American Museum of Natural History
The backbone of a story, particularly an entertaining and engaging one is motion, movement from one place in conscious and consensual reality to another.
Amplifying the reader’s engagement with the internal movement of the story, the emotional thread requires clarification of setting and displaying the subtle shifts that take place and occur in perception of setting reflective of one’s internal changes.
These changes are usually transmitted, or rather shown through the eyes and physical senses of the protagonist who is also the point-of-view character. Read the rest of this entry…

Adobe’s Design CS4, Intoxication and Zen in the Art of Writing…
“You must stay drunk on writing so reality cannot destroy you…writing allows just the right recipes of truth, life, reality as you are able to eat, drink, and digest without hyperventilating and flopping like a dead fish in your bed.â€
–Ray Bradbury, Zen in the Art of Writing
On reading this last night I considered how long it is taking me to get my novel together, The House, that is.
In actuality, the novel is written, and edited.
I’m presently working on the layout of the text. I’m a do-it-your-selfer.
After purchasing an edition of Adobe’s In Design CS4 I feel obligated to at least make an attempt at transferring my novel that I am self-publishing from MS Word to book format. Continue reading ‘Adobe’s Design CS4, Intoxication and Zen in the Art of Writing…’

Of Time, Plot and Einstein’s Special Theory of Relativity…
When we think about time, we automatically link it with motion. The most constant things in human history have been the motions of the objects in the universe. So we first figured out how to measure time by figuring how long it took for the various astronomical motions in our solar system. If you move through space you are also moving through time.
Time is the 4th dimension in our universe.
–Dr. Charles Liu, Research Associate,
Department of Astrophysics,
American Museum of Natural History
Albert Einstein’s gift to the 20th century through his postulation of the Special Theory of Relativity was recognizing the existence of a 4th dimension in our universe.
This 4th dimension is our experience of time.
Human consciousness of time plays an important role in the crafting of story.
Time directly relates to plot regarding fiction.
And as plot is the backbone of story it can be said that time forms the frame and an essential dimension of story. Read the rest of this entry…
