Forgiveness, Anxieties, and the Definition of “Enoughâ€â€¦
“Forgiveness is giving up all hope of having had a better past.â€
–Anne Lamott
I recently saw and interview with Anne Lamott wherein she shared her myriad idiosyncrasies, neuroses and anxieties.
While she shared many things throughout her hour-long conversation with her host, Dean Nelson, the thread that stuck with me at the end was her ruthless honesty.
At times I wished she would just stop, but had she done so I would have been hurt. Continue reading ‘Forgiveness, Anxieties, and the Definition of “Enoughâ€â€¦â€™

Of Strategizing, Pawns and Plotting…
Playing the game of chess demands that individuals strategize their moves.
To accomplish this each player must think ahead, considering what character or pieces they can move upon the chessboard, and to what square, empty or filled by one of the opponent’s characters or pieces, and the various moves their opponent can make in response. Read the rest of this entry…

Deadlines, Hands-On Parenting and Peace of Mind…
The last few weeks have been amazingly busy, torridly scattered.
With the academic year winding down for all three of our children I have had to put my writing on hold and do a lot of hands-on parenting.
I often wonder what writers/authors working on deadlines with publishing contracts, which appear forever to be tightening, do when the needs of their children, that seem perpetual, demand the writer’s attention.
I would hate to feel torn. Continue reading ‘Deadlines, Hands-On Parenting and Peace of Mind…’

Of Allies, Bishops, Stories and Forethought…
The Queen, in that she is the most powerful player in the game of chess stands closest to the King.
She stands on the square matching her color.
One Bishop stands beside the Queen. The 2nd Bishop stands to the other side of the King.
Essentially the King and Queen stand between the two Bishops.
Here we have one story, two monarchs standing between two spiritual figures where the threat presented in every game is the capture of the King.
And while the King can be seen as the protagonist, the figure around which the drama of game swirls, the Queen’s goal is clear.
Protect the monarch. Read the rest of this entry…

Of Kings, Strategies and Tactics…
Capture of the King in chess ends the game. And thus the role of each piece or character’s movements works towards the larger goals of protecting the King of the same color and capturing the King of the opponent.
The players move their characters and/or chess pieces towards accomplishing these two tasks.
In this way process of playing the game of chess resembles that of writing a book. While writers do not move our characters around the chessboard of our stories like the pieces of a chess game, each character of a novel or short story carries her or his own role, both in the narrative line and the structure of the plot. Cell Phone Glitches, “On Writing” and Gratitude…
Yesterday I hosted author, Myne Whitman, on Book Talk, Creativity and Family Matters. The original date for our interview was Saturday, May 15, 2010 @ 12 pm PT.
Twelve, noon on Saturdays is the usual time of the broadcast, but on Saturday we have some technical problems. Myne’s cell phone kept going out.
By the time she was able to connect I had logged off. I felt horrible.
I was also worried if she all right. Rarely do I have technical problems that prevent the entire broadcast.
Luckily, I’ve never had any author to blow off an interview. Anytime there’s an interruption something is seriously wrong beyond the guest’s control.
And that is what happened to Myne. Continue reading ‘Cell Phone Glitches, “On Writing” and Gratitude…’

Of Queens, Personalities, Wishes and Desires…
In chess, the Queen stands to the right of the King. Her major job is that of protecting the King. The dilemma of preventing the King’s capture rests upon the Queen’s head.
As such the Queen’s movements are central to winning the game of chess.
Establishing the major dilemma or problem in a story is essential to crafting fiction. The central problem inherently creates desire. And desire begets a series of actions that through cause-and-effect propel the narrative line–the plot.
Plot-driven stories answer the “What if?” question thereby directly conveying plot. Character-driven stories answer the questions, “Who? and Why now?”
From the personality of the of the central character rises and internal dilemma that determines behavior and reveals through a set of circumstances, often usual and common place, but no less bothersome and terrifying, a shift in way of behaving and perceiving the world.
This change or transformation emerges through a series of reactions and actions, again cause-and-effect set into motion by the protagonist’s personality, not so much the series of action themselves.
In this way the character-driven plot resembles that of the Queen’s aim and motive throughout chess. Perhaps this is why chess has been said to be the game of monarchs and aristocrats. Read the rest of this entry…

Anne Lamott, Bit by Bit, and Microwaved Water…
Our middle child sat for the SAT, at the outset of this week, but not before giving the completed term papers to the respective teachers who had assigned them.
Having read them several times when helping with the editing I learned much about the Gulf of Tonkin.
In editing the second paper I learned how our middle child views their faith in comparison to and contrast with our priest whose faith in God has provided him with the answers to all his questions–that of becoming comfortable with not knowing, the immense of uncertainties of life. Of Bishops, Kindreds Spirits and the Dawning of Awareness…
The Bishop in chess moves diagonally along the squares of the chessboard until it encounters another playing piece.
The various directions in which the Bishop can move create a cross upon the chess board. Less powerful than the Queen or Rook, one Bishop equals the strength of a Knight or 3 Pawns. Like the Rook, Queen, Knight and Pawns of the same color or player, the Bishop seeks to protect the King from capture.
Oh what drama? Just like a good novel or story.
Each player has two Bishops.
While one Bishop stands between the Knight and the Queen the second Bishop stands on the other side of the Queen and beside the King.
In this way the Bishop is the piece or character after the Queen to hold close proximity to the King. Read the rest of this entry…

Manuscripts, Editing, and the Chaos of Writing…
Last week was an absolute blur. It was crazy. My middle child, a junior in high school, was approaching taking her SAT for the first time.
Two semester term papers, each between 12 and 15 pages lay in wait to be edited. As a writer I had to assist in my child in this process. Whatever are mothers for?
I have no idea how parents who hate writing or have no interest in doing it manage to help their children with writing projects. Continue reading ‘Manuscripts, Editing, and the Chaos of Writing…’

Of Knights, L-Shaped Movements Crisis and Climax…
In the game of chess, the Knight is the only piece or character on the board that can jump over another pieces even those who are friendly.
The Knight moves in a “L”-shaped pattern. The Knight does this by going 2 steps forward, or backward, horizontal or vertical and then 1 step left or right or by going 1 step north, south, east or west, and then 2 steps left or right.
The Knight can also be seen as moving 2 spaces diagonally and then horizontal or vertical to the next space.
For this reason the Knight’s path of movement has never been well-defined.
Likewise obstruction is a challenge that the Knight easily avoids.
All the various movements a Knight can make from its position in one square create the pattern of a circle around that particular square.
This mirrors the circular pattern of a story, the development of character and evolution of awareness from the outset of a novel through the middle of a novel where tension builds and leads to Crisis and Climax then onto denouement that leads to resolution and the end where events, both external and internal, come full circle.
The Knight captures pieces of the opposing player that occupy the last space on which it lands.

Of Cinco de Mayo, an iPad and Mothering…
Friday afternoon I felt as if I would crack. Each one of my children, ages, 11-years-old to 23 years needed me for emotional support as they struggled to attain their goals. My eldest was working hard on a paper search for a 15-page graduate research paper she must write.
Our 11th grader needed guidance on how to organize her study and tutoring sessions for her Chemistry and Algebra finals along with preparing an outline for her 3rd and thankfully, last term paper. And our youngest, having been home for the holiday in observance of honoring Cinco de Mayo, simply wanted to go out.
Having had a strenuous week of trying to play catch-up on my writing–I had spent last weekend helping our middle edit the first two term papers 12-15 pages each–I was scoured with fatigue.
Dinner with my husband at our favorite restaurant down by the water in Berkeley would have been a godsend. Continue Reading »

Of Marriage, Vulnerability and Knowing That I Was Lost…
Of Marriage, Vulnerability and Knowing That I Was Lost…
I’ve been married for 28 years. I have 3 children.
Though I haven’t always felt this way, presently I wouldn’t trade my life for anything.
I like being married. I like being a mother.
It’s hard work both as a wife and as a mother.
The challenges of motherhood are pretty generic. The ones I encounter as a wife have less to do with my husband. He’s great, loving, loyal, more than I could have ever expected. Continue Reading »

“The House”, Kindle, i-Pads and Nooks…
In the next 3 months my second book, a novel, The House will be available for purchase. I say the next 3 months because in the vein of remaining honest, I am not certain what exact date this latest edition of The House will be available for consumers to purchase.
I must remain true to establish integrity. Integrity means more to an entrepreneur than gold.
And in working to publish The House I have become an entrepreneur. Continue reading ‘“The House”, Kindle, i-Pads and Nooks…’

Of Towers, Castles and the Battles Writers Wage…
The Rook, Tower or Castle in the game of chess speaks to boundaries.
Towers and Castles of the medieval era served not simply as homes, but also places of protection, that place to which rulers, those of their court, and the soldiers guarding them retreated and from which they waged battle.
The Tower provided a place from which the sentry or guardsmen could look out and view those coming to do battle or offend–those who sought to defeat the monarch and occupy her or his home.
Each time we set out to write a story or novel, we wage a war. Read the rest of this entry…

Time, Hope and Where Our Hearts Dwell…
Recently it became painfully obvious I have not been spending enough time with our youngest who is eleven.
It’s hard as a writer. And time is our most valuable commodity.
Yet, unlike money, time cannot be regained. I use money in the comparison because of the old American or capitalistic adage of “Time is money, and money is time,” the implication being that time and money hold equal value.
But they do not. Continue reading ‘Time, Hope and Where Our Hearts Dwell…’

Of Rooks, Guardians of the Threshold and Boundaries…
The chess piece or character known as The Rook, which is also called The Castle or as I like to say, The Tower, can move as many spaces along a row or column on the chessboard.
The Rooks (each player has 2) combined with The Queen, form the major chess pieces. In this way they operate like Guardians of the Threshold preventing the opposing player’s pieces from gaining or capturing a player’s King.
Guardians of the Threshold in a novel hold the boundaries between the protagonist and her or his goal.
While it may seem these Guardians work to prevent the major character from attaining her or his desire, they actually ensure the protagonist has or does integrate the skills provided by the Mentor, and necessary for achieving the ends to which she or he seeks.
In this way Guardians of the Threshold operate similarly to our personal unconscious, where we encounter Shadow. Read the rest of this entry…
