Of Inner Muses, Boxes, and Preserving Who We Are?
“…For two years I tried fitting into a box and I almost lost myself. I finally decided that I’m good enough. …”
“…Perhaps I’m weird. But I have never tried to sell my work [to a commercial publisher] I have never tried to get a [book] deal since I’ve been writing. I’ve had people to say, ‘If you do this, this and this, I can tell this one. I’ve thanked them, but I’m guided by my inner muse. If that is going to happen [commercial contract come my way] then it will happen. I’m on a different path. I can’t define it any better than that.”
–Angelia Menchan, author of “Ramblings,” “Schae’s Story,” “Is No Not Clear Enough for You?“,“Mrs. Black“, and publisher of the anthology, Women’s Writes,

The Writer, Narrative, and Evolution…
Make up a story. Narrative is radical, creating us at every moment it is being created.
–Toni Morrison (Accountable: Making America as Good as Its Promise by Tavis Smiley)
These words gripped me the first time I read them. That was over a week ago. In the days since, I have repeated and shared them with others.
Each time I speak them their meaning, the truth of purpose and process of what I do as a writer, the depth of impression left by the work I do, enlarges.
As writers we are constantly remaking ourselves through the words we write, the stories we tell, the plots we weave and unbraid. Continue reading ‘The Writer, Narrative, and Evolution…’

Of Blogging, "Motherwit Four," and Generosity?
Of the mother wit and wisdom in her writing Angelia Menchan says, “My mother was 30 years old before she decided to have children. I had these old women around me. My grandmother and then godmother lived to be 102. I was one of those old souls at a very young age. You know that story about the girl born with the veil over her face that would be me. And I just kind of tossed that over my shoulder. On August 9, 2010 I’m publishing an anthology of stories called, “Motherwit Four,” in honor of my mother.”
Author, Angelia Menchan, discusses “Ramblings,” “Schae’s Story,” “Is No Not Clear Enough for You?” and her recent novel, “Mrs. Black“.
She has also published an anthology, Women’s Writes, co-authored with Jennifer Coissiere, Darnetta Frazier, and Shaneika Ferguson.

85 Years and Counting II: Marriage, Vulnerability, and A Need for the Other
85 Years and Counting II:
Marriage, Vulnerability, and A Need for the Other
http://ping.fm/bmEEb (Herbert & Zelmyra Fisher by D. L. Anderson)
As a psychotherapist who earned my MA in Psychology from The California Institute of Integral Studies, in San Francisco, I see beauty and importance in all religions and faiths–Christianity, Taoism, Ile Ife, Hinduism, Sikhism, Buddhism, Islam, Jainism, Native American teachings, Yoruban Cosmology, Voudon, etc.
The religious texts and teachings of each make significant contributions towards the spiritual development and evolution of individuals and humanity. I subscribe to Carl Jung’s axiom that religions as intricate psychological systems the humans used to meet the daily task of coping with life’s uncertainty and travails. Like Deepak Chopra advises, I encourage each individual to choose what religion best fits her or his personality.
In this vein I view the institution of marriage, whatever the culture of socio-economic strata, spiritual/religious belief or the lack thereof, as raising the issue of human vulnerability.
As humans we are social beings.
We need human connection. …

Men, Women and The Taboo of Love and Romance in Marriage…
Author, poet, novelist, and writing teacher, David Mura states: “Identifying what compels you to write, reveals the reason we are driven to write each or our works.”
To complicate things, I find that not only is the reason that I write multi-faceted, it also evolves and shifts at various intervals in my life.
I initially began to write because I wanted to read stories of characters with whom I could identify with by culture and race.
On a deeper level, I wanted to read about characters who shared not only my race and culture as an African American woman of the American South, but of a middle class background, who in many ways could appear quite Waspish, but was not. Of Narrative, Journeys, and What Compels Us to Write…
“Make up a story. Narrative is radical, creating us at the very moment it is being created.”
–Toni Morrison, Nobel, and Pulitzer Prize-winning author
The protagonist, in reaching home, during this last chapter of the journey, must evidence that she or he has traveled, not simply waited steps beyond home, seconds beyond the gates of the home native city and after sufficient time to have journeyed far, they reappear with their tale.
Just as the central character must evidence the crisis has transformed her or his way of thinking regarding making decisions, so too, when reaching home again, she or he must demonstrated they have traveled, that they have truly been away.
They accomplish this through the external travel of physical engagement and internal journey of self-reflection.
Often when we travel we bring back gifts for those we love.
The gifts come from the places we have been, where our itinerary of travel has taken us. Read the rest of this entry…

85 Years and Counting: Commitment in an Age of Immediacy and Dispensability
The words “After 85 years, husband and wife say…” caught my attention, and immediately I was reading of Herbert and Zelmyra Fisher, wed for nearly 8.5 decades.
Many people do not live that long, never mind businesses. That a union of two people could endure nearly 9 decades of connection and commitment is amazing. That it is a marriage and one in America proves nothing short of miraculous.
Each day individuals in our society of Facebook accounts, instant messaging and Tweets of 140 chars (short, for characters or letters) exit relationships of all kinds by penning their signature, or with the click of a button remove and/or block a previous association or connection on a social network, or by simply forwarding an e-mail or text message.
Dispensability and disposability has gone global, electronic, and immediate. …

Marriage, Zelmyra and Herbert Fisher, and Squidoo
As if I haven’t been blogging enough I recently opened a 3rd Squidoo lens–…where the pain of family meets compassion…and a change of heart…
An author of Women’s Fiction centered on wives, and husbands trying to make it work, and succeeding, I felt the need to share my insights and discoveries about the institution of which I have participated for nearly 3 decades.
Thirty years at this, I recently uncovered, is nothing compared to Zelmyra and Herbert Fisher of North Carolina, who hold the Guinness Book of World Records for the couple with the longest years of wedlock. Continue reading ‘Marriage, Zelmyra and Herbert Fisher, and Squidoo…’

For Richer, For Poorer II: Emotions, Money, and Marriage in America
An award-winning, nationally-syndicated personal finance columnist, Liz Pulliam Weston writes:
* The median net worth of married-couple households in the latest Census Bureau wealth study, conducted in 2002, was $101,975. For single men, median wealth was $23,700. For single women, $20,217.
* A 15-year study of 9,000 people found that during that time, people who married and stayed married built up nearly twice the net worth of people who stayed single. …when…other factors are held constant…income and education…the fact that they were married contributed to a 4% annual rise in these couples’ wealth.
* Wealth declines typically started four years before a divorce was final…the breakup ultimately reduced the typical person’s net worth by 77% of that of the average single person.
According to Nielsen//NetRatings, Liz Pulliam is the most-read personal finance columnist on the Internet.
Most of us grew up in a home controlled by adults. The attitudes about money that those adults hold, whether we like or disagree with them, shape our lives. Inevitably they shape how we see ourselves, and ultimately how we perceive our place in the world.
Individuals who grow up in a home where one or both parents donate a lot of time to their job, career or profession and making money, whether out of necessity or because they love their work, will view money quite differently than those who come from a home where money is viewed as simply important for acquiring the things one needs to live healthily and joyfully.
Two spouses of a marriage who come from the same economic strata could hold quite different views on this matter.
One spouse may view living joyfully and healthily to include spending money frugally, and contributing time to less expensive ventures.

Passion, Blogging, and The Core of Who We Are…
I received this heartfelt comment to a recent blog post, entitled, Blogging, Resistance, and Developing Discipline…
“My issue is figuring out what to write about outside the magazine. I have made a list of topics of interest… would like to establish myself in a particular subject area. Any ideas of how I can do this?…”
My response, after thanking the visitor for submitting their question was, “What is your passion?…You want to begin identifying that which most interests your heart and soul.”
The key to successful blogging is to consistently post new material, and writing articles that both engage the readers and visitors to your website while providing them useful information. Continue reading ‘Passion, Blogging, and The Core of Who We Are…’

Of Peeling Onions, Surrender and Writing from The Zone?
The stage of renewal in a story offers a second opportunity for rebirth. Unlike the crisis, the scenes of renewal focus on the inner life of the major character.
Through the action of deciding and choosing to share the good news of her or his triumph in both word and deed, the protagonist now heads down a road, the path and events of which are shaped and influenced more by internal changes than those physically committed.
The physical actions committed during the stages of crisis and climax set the protagonist on a path of undergoing deep internal change–renewal.
Renewal signals the time in a story or novel where the central character surrenders to the nuclear fall out, so to speak, of her or his actions.
He or she has carried out the physical task set forth by the changes and upheaval leveled at the outset of the story.
At the peak of action she or he dueled her their enemies and/or central antagonist.
In the wake of triumph she/he has made decisions reflective of their survival and the wisdom granted by having battled through the crisis. Read the rest of this entry…

Moviegoers, Story, and Dreams…
As movie studios lament the low numbers of moviegoers that seems to be dwindling even further, movie directors and producers appear to be utilizing gimmicks of technology to draw crowds back to the theater.
Movies made in 3-D, and shown on Imax screens comprise the recent fads that are but an extension of forcing plot over character in an effort to engage audiences.
In years past this effort rested on action packed adventures, swashbucklers we call them, and enormous special effects.
But what about story? Continue reading ‘Moviegoers, Story, and Dreams…’

For Richer, For Poorer: Money, Freedom, and the American Marriage

Of Swords, Inner Demons and the Waters of Renewal?
The area of a novel that follows climax brings renewal. Yet writing this part of the story gets tricky.
Rolling towards the finish line authors can easily lose control of the narrative. We must remain upon the horse of our story.
Climax has delivered a delayed and second crisis a second opportunity for experiencing transformation, what some might call the aftershocks of the major earthquake of the peak crisis bringing everything to its head.
In this way novels can be seen to have three major crises or turning points–revelations or reversals of fortune–from which others hurricanes or twisters of change spin off.
The first revelation presents itself in the initial shake-up, dissolving the status quo. This rises from an unresolved problem rooted in back-story. This provides the story’s present dilemma. This initial change that overturns the homeostasis of the life of the protagonist takes place during the opening of a novel or story.
Then comes the arc of action where the protagonist meets with her or his archenemy, that from which she or he has been running or pursuing the length of the story.
Then arc of action is the point of crisis. Read the rest of this entry…

More Than Silver and Gold: Men, Divorce and Suicide
“American men are four times more likely than women to take their own lives. It’s a troubling phenomenon, rooted in such factors as genetics, upbringing and even career choice. But a growing body of research suggests that divorce is one of the major culprits in suicides among adult males.” –Katie Drummond, Suicide Rate Greater Among Divorced Men, Research Finds, Aol.news (March 10, 2010)

Promises to Myself, Blogging, and Passion…
When I decided to self-publish my novel I knew that I would have to set up a website on which I would post blogs.
The basis of any website involves dispensing useful information. We do this through writing blog posts.
Much like fellow classmates in my MFA Program in Creative Writing at Goddard College when facing the annotations we would have to do, I had no idea how I would find the time to consistently write the blog posts while still writing my novels. Of Dimensions of Experience, Mystery and Feet of Practicality?
Climax follows a time of crisis in a story.
As the narrative heads for resolution the protagonist must decide how she or he will evidence not only their survival and triumph of the great battle she or he has fought, but how they will manifest those that shift in consciousness, that change of heart, in a way that will allow the experience to remain alive within them.
Then, and only then, can she, or he truly know the victory over death whose roots lie in fear, doubt and disbelief.
So many times we sabotage ourselves into thinking that we are less than what we are.
Likewise we ground our identity of who we are and our purpose in life on the erroneous belief that we do not matter, and that what we have to offer means little if anything.
This is often the case for writers and artists of many kinds. Read the rest of this entry…

Blogging, Resistance, and Developing Discipline…
I like blogging for several reasons, the first of which is that it strengthens my writing. It’s often hard for fiction writers to commit to blogging on a regular basis.
Much of our resistance comes from our dedication to crafting and refining our stories and novel. It takes time, a lot, to draft and revise our works. Continue reading ‘Blogging, Resistance, and Developing Discipline…’

Of Envy, Doubt, and Still More Risks?
Following crisis, the protagonist must choose, decide and act.
Will she or he return to business as usual, keeping secret what they have learned, or will they share it with others?
Will they share the healing they have undergone with others, or will she or he choose the safe path of saying little or nothing about the internal changes that have reshaped them?
Risks come with sharing the good news of our survival, moving beyond that time of initial upheaval and broad sweeping changes.
We face the possibility of those we tell refusing to believe us.
Those who do may grow envious, and then exploit the doubts still others hold and turn who groups of people against us. Read the rest of this entry…

Mothers, Hope, and the words, “I’m sorry…”
The hardest thing about being a mother is that you never feel as though you’ve done enough. So many nights I go to bed wondering, pondering, construing, and often misconstruing, I am sure, how I might have done better at something for or with my one of my children.
It’s particularly hard when you witness your child struggling to accomplish or overcome an obstacle.
Bullies at school, teachers who seemed to have landed from a planet where all inhabitants have forgotten what it was like, or just how difficult it is to be a child.
To be sure, growing up is hard to do. Continue reading ‘Mothers,

Injurious Actions, Political Dictators, and Near Sadist Employers…
The recipients of our injurious words and actions most often constitute the group of people closest to us, daughters, sons, mothers, wives, husbands, fathers, co-workers, professional partners and colleagues, classmates, students, employees, those subordinate, lateral and even sometimes superior in professional rank to us.

Of Blogs, The Umbilical Cord, and the Internet?,
Connecting with the godhead, that part of the divine that lives within all, the Imago Dei, coalesces the disparate parts of the soul, mind and brokenness of heart and spirit.
Writing or revising and editing the crisis, and climax of a story, or novel can, and often dispenses healing to the writer whose words later transmit this to the reader.
The writer undergoes a trial or test of sorts each time she or he sets out to craft a work. Read the rest of this entry…
