The Enemy at the GatesGuardians of the Threshold
Guardians of the Threshold, which Christopher Vogler discusses in The Writer’s Journey, Mythic Structure for Writers, may present as enemies.
Yet instead they seek to test the protagonist or central character of a story, to ensure that she or he has integrated the wisdom and information provided by the Mentor.
The best protagonists earn success by seeking to understand the experience of the Guardian of the Threshold. Working in tandem with the Threshold Guardians the protagonist gains access to dimensions of her or himself they had yet to tap. Read the rest of this entry…

Mentor and Story
Mentors are the wisdom-carriers in stories. They infect the protagonist or major character with knowledge and information needed to complete their quest.
Mentors encourage the heroine or hero to believe, and have faith in her or his ability to meet the challenge standing before them. On a psycho-spiritual level mentors represent the Imago Dei, the god-image that all humans carry. Read the rest of this entry…

Civility and Order
The word, hero, in Greek means, “to protect and to serve“. We often find these words on the side of police cars. Thus we think of law enforcement.
And yet, from the etymological perspective rooted in Greek, what is to be protected?
What or who needs and desires safety of survival?
What is ultimately at stake with any story? Life; the protagonist’s survival.
The survival at stake or being risked, as with all humans, exists on at least two levels. Read the rest of this entry…

Mythic Structure and Story
All stories consist of a few common elements. These elements constitute all stories, fairy tales, dreams, movies, and myths. These elements also form what Christopher Vogler describes in The Writer’s Journey–Mythic Structure for Writers, as The Hero’s Journey.
The Hero’s Journey becomes not only a universal myth for human kind, but also offers a blueprint for writers in constructing our stories. Read the rest of this entry…

–Green my life and remove my sorrows.
The picture is stunning. But it was the words underneath that caught my attention. The relationship between global warming and fiction writing may not present as clear.
Yet one need only think of their surroundings or perhaps the setting of a novel or one’s own life to grasp the reason why writers by our very nature are concerned about saving our earthly environment from the clear and present dangers facing our planet. Read the rest of this entry…

Conflict and Desire
Conflict arises from a character seeking to achieve a goal and encountering an obstacle along the way.
Another way of looking at this is CHARACTER + GOAL = CONFLICT.
It is most helpful, when writing a story, if you can define the character’s goal in physical terms.
But what if your protagonist desires love? Read the rest of this entry…

Character, Goals and Obstacles
A writer has three questions she or he must answer before or when beginning a story.
Who is my protagonist? What does she or he want? And what is getting in her or his way?
Each of these aspects delivers an important component of story. Together they create a force that propels plot.
A story shows what happens when a character sets out to achieve a goal, and or solve a problem. In the best of stories and usually in life, we encounter obstacles in the process of seeking to achieve our goals. Read the rest of this entry…

Loves and Hates
What a character hates or despises says much about what she or he loves, adores, and that for which she or he yearns.
The adage, “You can’t hate what you don’t love,” is as true for our characters as it is for us.
A protagonist who hates their mother or father, most likely yearns for acceptance and love from that parent they so loathe, and whom they fear does not approve of them. Read the rest of this entry…

The Writer/Mother
“I’m a better writer and certainly a better person because I am a mother,” says author, Lisa Unger. “My best times for writing and creativity are between 5 am to noon. Afternoons are devoted to my daughter when she returns home from school.”
The role of mother and writer is a taxing one for those of us who have chosen to give ourselves to the two paths of writing and mothering in whatever order they came to us. For Lisa Unger, who has penned 8 literary thrillers, nothing has rivaled her commitment and love of writing, more than her love and adoration for her daughter. Read the rest of this entry…
