The Quiet That Descended...
A quiet descended somewhere between the last hours of Christmas Eve and 12 am Christmas morn. My husband with two of our children was away at midnight Mass.
Our middle had been home with me preparing the early Christmas meal. We always eat our Christmas meal in the wee hours of the morn after the return from Christmas Mass.
With the dressing baking in the stove and the meat and vegetables simmering I sat down to take a breather.
And then I heard the silence. Continue reading ‘The Quiet That Descended…’

Stories, Technology and Loving Husbands...
For Christmas my husband gave me the Mac Version of Dictate. Data is a program that allows you to type on your computer through voice activation.
In short, you speak into the receiver and the computer types what you say. He tells me that the program has to become familiar with our voice, which requires little, if any time. Continue reading ‘Stories, Technology, and Loving Husbands…’

Sick With a Cold...
I’ve been sick the last five days with a cold. It’s been hard to write. And so I haven’t.
I also feel sicker, worse, for not writing.
It’s always difficult for me to give up my writing, even when it’s temporary and I know I need to rest.
That’s the hard part about being a mother and writer and all that other stuff that we do that is so important.
And then I’m also a wife. Continue reading ‘Sick With a Cold…’

Christmas Gifts...
What would you give a fellow writer for Christmas?
My gift to all writers and authors would be the ability to keep writing, no matter the circumstances.
This is what I wish for myself.
Considering the circumstances of the economy I think many of our fellow comrades, like ourselves, could use a good dose of encouragement. Continue reading ‘Christmas Gifts…’

Prayers Enroute to the Pot of Gold…
I find it hard when praying to ask for blessings regarding my writing. perhaps that’s because I feel already gifted in that I am able to write, that my ability to craft stories and that I am doing so is such a wonderful gift.

The Holidays and Traveling Slowly...
December has been an interesting month. Besides the uptick of Holiday events and other matters requiring my attention such as my two older children entering finals and needing support.
And though I have returned to exercising–I walk and climb hills–and my body feels great, I have simultaneously felt a general lag of energy to write.
Most specifically it has been difficult to write on my novel that accomplished a fair amount on during NaNoWriMo. Continue reading ‘The Holidays and Traveling Slowly…’

Mind of Mind...
A teacher under whom I studied one said that, “Writing is the mind on the page.”
Now a published author, I often wonder when reading, whose mind does what I am reading reflect, that of the writer/author, or is it that of the characters or the protagonist?
The question may seem moot, since all writing on some level reflects the mind of the writer/author.
Yet the personalities of us authors and writers, like those of other human individuals, hold many aspects.
Whose mind?

Fodder for Our Writing...
I attended a Christmas brunch this past weekend. It was wonderful. These kinds of events challenge me.
With so many in attendance, over 100, the threat of emotional overwhelm looms large.
The sheer presence of so many human individuals in a single space and during a time that brims with symbols and themes of family, mortality, life meaning and purpose leverages an intensity of spirit and feeling that causes one to stop and pay attention, particularly if their livelihood and mission in life requires observance of human interactions and relationships. Passion and Responsibility...
This week was busy. The children returned to school. Fall semester finals loom ahead for my 11th grader with two paper due in just one class.
My eldest, a graduate student, faces no examinations but has 2 papers due, both averaging 25 pages.
During our conversation on Wednesday afternoon, she stated earlier that day the head of her director of her graduate program in whose class my daughter is a student, assigned a 15-page document outlining the research each student proposes to carry out during their internship.
Alas, my 5th grader loves to sing. This year she auditioned and was accepted in to the school choir. The choir will perform 6 times during this Holiday Season.
I’m very involved in the lives of my children and with their work. An author I feel obligated to use my skills at writing and at persevering when the going gets tight to assist them in helping them in life.
It gets crazy sometimes. I feel pulled in 10 million ways. Continue reading ‘Passion and Responsibility…’

Peaks, Valleys, and Plateaus...
Between all of this I want to finish the rough draft of the novel I started writing during NaNoWriMo. Though having reached the 50,000 minimum, I still have to complete the middle and write the ending.
The facilitator of the on-line writing class I am taking gave us two exercises during our meeting this week. One was to list the key scenes we have yet to write of our novel. All of the students participated in NaNoWriMo.
The second exercise was to list all the things concerning our protagonist’s dilemma that we have yet to address or include in our novel. Continue reading ‘Peaks, Valleys and Plateaus…’

Interruptions and Writing with a Plan...
Interruptions and Writing with a Plan…
That I reached 50,000 words planted me square in the middle of my book, yes the dreaded middle.
Writing the middle of a novel presents as my greatest challenge. I do not want the story to sag or the plot to lose ground.
I want my novel to come alive in then middle like the middle’s of the novels that I have loved reading and have inspired me as both a lover of the written word and a writer. Continue reading ‘Interruptions and Writing with a Plan…’

Winning, Or Is That What It's About...
I reached the 50,000 word minimum to so-to-speak win NaNoWriMo. But I did not finish my novel.
Let me repeat, I did not complete my novel. In my opinion, and estimation according to the blueprint I laid out for my story, I came nowhere close to completing the first draft of my novel, Lotus Blooming.
One part of me holds a little shame in having boasted so much about the great experience I had as a participant of NaNoWriMo. And yet this other part of me wonders if I have not actually gained the greatest gift NaNoWriMo can provide anyone who participates regardless of whether they reached the 50,000-word mark.
While the rules of NaNoWriMo may consider me a winner of sorts, I do not feel that I won anything, or deserved to. Then again, I did not seek to reach the 50,000-word minimum to win. Continue reading ‘Winning or Is That What It’s About…’

Continue reading

Joy and Energy While Writing...
Each year I have participated in an online writing class, the goal of which was to write a novel in 2 and half months.
Each of the three years prior to the present I began writing a novel, duration of which crossed over and continued past the month of November during which NaNoWriMo takes place.
And each year I lost the steam and impulse to write long before reaching 20,000 words or drawing near 80 pages. Continue reading ‘Joy and Energy While Writing…’

Transitions…
Transitions constitute an important part of writing fiction.
There are the ones that allow for dips back in time, memories or flashbacks, as we like to call them. And then there are those that propel us forward; leaps is what my first and second semester MFA advisor called them.
Transitions connect much of the writer’s life pushing and pulling us from one place to another, in and out of one memory then onward to a new project.
So much of what drives us to write, compels us to write our stories are memories of what once was and now is never more. Continue reading ‘Transitions…’

Memories of NaNoWriMo…

The month of November has ended. And so goes with it the time of NaNoWriMo.
Yet while the month draws to a close the experience does not. It will never leave me. Or shall I say I will never lose sight of it, the writing I accomplished during NaNoWriMo and who I became.
More of a writer.
Terry Brooks distinguishes between authors and writers. While authors writer stories, writers continue to learn, in fact seek out new skills to hone and integrate regarding the craft and artistry of writing simultaneous to the process of writing their stories. While some are daunted by the daily word count asked of us (1600) during NaNoWriMo, the positive aspect of this entire venture is to simply write.
Such a high word count due to the compression of time (one month) leaves little time to think, which for me, is where the inner critic slips in.
NaNoWriMo is also a great time to learn about my strengths and challenges in writng, the way I write, my process.

Of Idiosyncracies, Formidable Personalities and Specifics
Describing an experience or person as bad or terrible will not suffice in fiction writing.
Writing that the foster parents in a novel are mean or horrible does not flesh out the unique idiosyncrasies of their formidable personalities.
Let us turn to the context of the orphan in a less than ideal foster home. Read the rest of this entry…

Of Crevices, Cracks and Teflon
Symbols deepen what we, as readers, come to know and experience with a character.
But what makes us feel with and for her, or him [the protagonist]–cry with them, scream for them, die with them?
What ultimately moves and transforms us, the reader, along with the central character of a story, or novel?
Certainly obstacles and a great antagonist stoke the fires of us cheering on the protagonist.
But what brings us even closer to feeling, touching and being moved by the humanity, and vulnerability of a central character? Read the rest of this entry…

Talismans/Symbols and Goals
Every good story possesses not only a character, who through the author’s lucid and vibrant descriptions, draws us to root for her or him, but who also reflects aspect of ourselves with whom we have yet to make peace, or accept.
The protagonists of these stories also face a formidable opponent, a living, and breathing antagonist, whose complexities both in action, words and thoughts compel the central character to show both the light and the dark aspects of their personalities. Read the rest of this entry…

That quest presents itself not unlike a summons to court.

Hark, the Herald Angels Sing!
Much like Paul Revere announced the British were on their way to do battle in Lexington and Concord, Massachusetts, the Herald archetype in storytelling announces change and transformation to the major character.
The Herald places the protagonist on a state of alert, tells him or her how to read the signs, “One if by land, two if by see.” They warn the central character to be on guard. New things are coming her or his way. Read the rest of this entry…

It was hard getting up this morning, or I should say, …this afternoon.
But I got my 1600 words for NaNoWriMo, 1667 to be exact.
I think I’m still struggling to adjust to the time change

1st Week of NaNoWriMo
it was intense, this first week of NaNoWriMo,
but I got through it.
i’ve been planning my novel, Lotus Blooming, since June.
i’m glad I sketched it out.
that lull and loss of energy, and not knowing where to go with the story, or what to write next–
it’s not there.

Who Am I: What Do I Really Want?
According to Jungian theory, the shadow aspect of one’s personality contains any, and everything that falls out of alignment, stands apart, from the ego ideal.
The writer must examine the central character’s values, those held by her or his family, mother, father and culture, to gain a sense of how the Shadow archetype might manifest in story. Read the rest of this entry…

Illusions, Deceptions, and Various Manifestations of Doubt
The Chameleon or Shapeshifter archetype relates directly to the Jungian archetypes of anima and animus. Anima is the feminine aspect all men hold and animus is the masculine aspect every female carries in her psyche.
Anima and animus reside in the archetypal unconscious that belies the individual unconscious layered by shadow. Anima and animus speak to the residual memories of past lives, ancestral histories. Read the rest of this entry…

Chameleons and The Evolution of Character
Writers and others in the dramatic arts find it hard to grasp the function of the Shapeshifter archetype due to its strongly psychological nature, and its role in story. Because of the energy it embodies, some term the Shapeshifter a Chameleon.
When viewed as a force, or aspect of personality or character the Shapeshifter operates as a Doubting Thomas or Devil’s Advocate, in its efforts to stir the protagonist towards pursuit, and quest. Read the rest of this entry…

Transformation: Making the Ordinary into the Extraordinary
Just as all good stories contain aspects of redemption, and death, so too transformation forms the engine propelling the narrative.
A major character or protagonist is like the Prophet Ezekiel in the Old Testament. God used Ezekiel to teach the Children of Israel how to suffer. Protagonists of our stories show readers, in much the same way, how to grow, and change as the challenges of life demand. Read the rest of this entry…

The Enemy at the GatesGuardians of the Threshold
Guardians of the Threshold, which Christopher Vogler discusses in The Writer’s Journey, Mythic Structure for Writers, may present as enemies.
Yet instead they seek to test the protagonist or central character of a story, to ensure that she or he has integrated the wisdom and information provided by the Mentor.
The best protagonists earn success by seeking to understand the experience of the Guardian of the Threshold. Working in tandem with the Threshold Guardians the protagonist gains access to dimensions of her or himself they had yet to tap. Read the rest of this entry…

Mentor and Story
Mentors are the wisdom-carriers in stories. They infect the protagonist or major character with knowledge and information needed to complete their quest.
Mentors encourage the heroine or hero to believe, and have faith in her or his ability to meet the challenge standing before them. On a psycho-spiritual level mentors represent the Imago Dei, the god-image that all humans carry. Read the rest of this entry…

Civility and Order
The word, hero, in Greek means, “to protect and to serve“. We often find these words on the side of police cars. Thus we think of law enforcement.
And yet, from the etymological perspective rooted in Greek, what is to be protected?
What or who needs and desires safety of survival?
What is ultimately at stake with any story? Life; the protagonist’s survival.
The survival at stake or being risked, as with all humans, exists on at least two levels. Read the rest of this entry…

Mythic Structure and Story
All stories consist of a few common elements. These elements constitute all stories, fairy tales, dreams, movies, and myths. These elements also form what Christopher Vogler describes in The Writer’s Journey–Mythic Structure for Writers, as The Hero’s Journey.

Conflict and Desire
Conflict arises from a character seeking to achieve a goal and encountering an obstacle along the way.
Another way of looking at this is CHARACTER + GOAL = CONFLICT.
It is most helpful, when writing a story, if you can define the character’s goal in physical terms.

Character, Goals and Obstacles
A writer has three questions she or he must answer before or when beginning a story.
Who is my protagonist? What does she or he want? And what is getting in her or his way?
Each of these aspects delivers an important component of story. Together they create a force that propels plot.
A story shows what happens when a character sets out to achieve a goal, and or solve a problem. In the best of stories and usually in life, we encounter obstacles in the process of seeking to achieve our goals. Read the rest of this entry…

A story shows what happens when a character sets out to achieve a goal, and or solve a problem. In the best of stories and usually in life, we encounter obstacles in the process of seeking to achieve our goals. Read the rest of this entry…

Character, Goals and Obstacles
A writer has three questions she or he must answer before or when beginning a story.
Who is my protagonist? What does she or he want? And what is getting in her or his way?
Each of these aspects delivers an important component of story. Together they create a force that propels plot.

Loves and Hates
What a character hates or despises says much about what she or he loves, adores, and that for which she or he yearns.
The adage, “You can’t hate what you don’t love,” is as true for our characters as it is for us.
A protagonist who hates their mother or father, most likely yearns for acceptance and love from that parent they so loathe, and whom they fear does not approve of them. Read the rest of this entry…

The Writer/Mother
“I’m a better writer and certainly a better person because I am a mother,” says author, Lisa Unger. “My best times for writing and creativity are between 5 am to noon. Afternoons are devoted to my daughter when she returns home from school.”
The role of mother and writer is a taxing one for those of us who have chosen to give ourselves to the two paths of writing and mothering in whatever order they came to us. For Lisa Unger, who has penned 8 literary thrillers, nothing has rivaled her commitment and love of writing, more than her love and adoration for her daughter. Read the rest of this entry…

The Business of Writing
“It’s way harder to establish a career as a working writer than to get published by a traditional New York publishing house.”
–Lisa Unger on the Business of Writing
Whether the author achieves publication of their work through traditional means, or chooses to self-publish, she or he must play an active role in the promoting, and marketing of her or his work.
In that Lisa Unger had worked in publishing for over a decade before gaining publication of her first novel, she held no preconceived notions of glory or fame on becoming a published author. Read the rest of this entry…

A Writers Voice
Hearing the words you’ve written and read in your own voice develops voice. It also awakens you, the writer, to your style of putting words together.
You hear when your words fall away from that established cadence and rhythm, and when they come together. You come to see the endless possibilities of music your words can and in so doing are made able to recognize when due to awkward phrasing the sounds clash from dissonance.

Loving Our Characters
American Buddhist nun, Pema Chödrön, writes in “Comfortable with Uncertainty” that, “…When we start to meditate or work with any kind of spiritual discipline, we often think that somehow we’re going to improve [ourselves], which is a subtle kind of aggression against who we are…Meditation practice isn’t about trying to throw ourselves away and become something better. It’s about trying to befriend who we are.”

Twists
The best stories often have a twist at the end. But what is a twist? Is it the result of having led the reader in one direction, only to surprise them with action rising from another? Not quite. The best way to understand twists in literature is to envision every story or novel as a mystery, or that

Our Words Are But Children at Play
Like an old man watching children at play, we need to see through our own seriousness. No matter how seriously the children go about their games, the old man is amused and never for a moment takes them to be real. We can watch our own thoughts and emotions in the same way. Without taking them so seriously, we can see them as children at play and give them lots of space.

My Love for Things Victorian and Historical
As an author of modern-day Women’s Fiction, I find that reading Historical Fiction and of the Victorian era gives me room to breathe and imagine, or re-imagine, if you will, new twists on possibilities for plots in the modern era.
